I like what Coach said about the reasons only matter before the fight....
I have had parents just like this also. I tell them the school policy on fighting and then I also tell them that in the "real world" it is sometimes necessary to defend oneself if there are no adults to help(especially in the area where I teach) But school is not the "real world" and anyone who fights will be punished regardless of who starts it. The students seem to understand the difference between school and the "real world".I have used this explanation with 4th and 2nd graders and it has satisfied the parents as well.
