Clip to ScrapBook
If you wait at least 10 minutes into class, they are less likely to make silly comments. Some students resent it if you mispronounce their names-apologize and don't argue with them. African-American names can really be hard
to pronounce!!

Some of them will say "What" when their name is called. I just call the next name and go on. If it is a horrible class (screaming, yelling, jumping up, and rude), I will find a quiet student and ask him/her to tell me who is absent.

Speaking of grade books, I wished teachers would compile a list of names. We don't need to see grades while we call the roll! Also I

wished class rosters didn't have student's names or phone numbers on them!! This is violation of privacy. Just a side note.

It doesn't hurt to turn off the lights if they are too loud. Another approach is a sign-in sheet.
