Get them started in their work first

First get them started working. THEN take attendance unless you are showing a video. I usually use a pencil and make a mark beside their name and after I have taken roll, I will write down the names on a sheet. Have a student send it to the office, post on STI (if teacher gives you a password) or call the attendance office.
