I do this with my kids. I take a timer, make a student responsible for setting the time at five mintues. All students sit in a round circle on the floor, or on their desks. As the time starts, students begin to read their self-selected book. When the timer goes off, I take ball and pass it to students, asking me for a brief synopsis of the story for backround information, and then they have to tell me to sum up what theyve read. It focuses on so many literary elements like summarizing, main idea, details, etc. My kids love it, and they know if I throw a ball to them and they aren't ready, they look bad, so they all read.
