Science Club
By Sue W.

Clip to ScrapBook
Our science club is for 1st through 5th grade.
One advantage we have is our parent organizer is also a vet. We do 3 lesson series. One was vet science, Dr. Katie brought a dog and showed the kids how a small animal exam
is done and answered questions. For the last session, half of our group of about 70 kids went to the humane society and the other half to her vet clinic and actually saw a cat neutered. Then they switched. Talk about a connection, one little kid said " Just like mommy!."

Another series on biomimicry was largely planned and conducted by the middle school science club and included a

winter trip to the nature center.
We had a series on geology and archeology, a dad who was a paleontologist helped out that time. Our series on simple machines included experiments, time on activites in the computer lab and a trip to the Tilt-O-Whirl factory in our town where a couple of parents work.

Our latest series is on airplanes. The first session we had demonstrations first, then split by grade levels to make different styles of paper airplanes. We have found that parent involvement is a key, and following kids interests.

Katie has discovered there are a lot of sciecne clubs in Great Britain and hads found some sites there.
