Do you think it's fair to give the whole class extra homework in hopes that some students might encourage the few talkers to stop? My experience has been that the children who follow the rules are the ones who suffer the most with this approach, unless of course you observe that basically the entire class seems to be talking. I understand how it can be effective, but couldn't we single out the biggest talkers for the extra homework? You may not be able to catch every talker, but at least the few who aren't talking won't be penalized. This has worked well for me in quieting the class quickly...just my two cents.
