district wide By KA

It is something used district wide here. I have used it in the past and am actually using it already this year...starting Monday. I have a defiant student who behaves similar to what you described. It is not the first| thing to do but if you have tried a few other approaches without success then I would highly recommend. We have a couple of different programs but the essence is the same throughout. The one I am starting on Monday is divided into three sections for each day. So a grid of 15 blocks altogether. Below 5 emoticons are labled. Really happy one=compliance happy=1 reminder straight face | | = 2 reminders sad face = 3 reminders and the crying face means 4 or more. You can adjust the scale. My goal for next week that we set together was 10 out of 15 happy faces earns a reward... that is provided by the parents. For him the agreement settled upon was a visit to the dollar store. I always do these in conjunction with the parents. I like to think of it as the tag team approach to discipline. But I do tell them that the occasional straight line face is not a bad thing ...kids are not perfect and we can't expect it all the time. I also let them know that if they get the crying face it will always come with a quick note letting them know what the problem was so they can practice fixing it at home. Focus is on correcting it not punishing it.
