I did a display of maps, our classroom, our school building, our neighborhood, our town. Each map was circled with yarn, and the yarn connected to the next larger area map showing the first area. For example, the classroom map circle was connected to a small circle around that area on the school map. The school map was circled with a different color that connected it to the area of our school on the meighborhood map, etc. If you have lots of room you might add a state and national map.
Another idea might be an evolving map. Start with a green background and add a river and lake. When you have talked about symbols for roads, add those, maybe black for highways, brown for secondary roads. If you talk about symbols for schools, parks, railroads or what ever, add those symbols to the map. Add a legend, a compass rose, whatever you talk about for map reading.
