calling out
By Kim

Clip to ScrapBook
I always have a few that want to yell out. I find a few tricks help. I always give them a mode of response: raise a quiet hand, show me the answer on your fingers, whisper the answer to your neighbor, call the answer out.
If someone yells out I say don't give away your good answer, remember I'm looking for a quiet hand.
I have the other students remind the caller by showing a piece sign or finger to the nose. Sometimes I even tell the caller they may want to put one hand over their mouth to help them remember and the other in the air.

I sporadically give fancy (smelly, shiny or animal) stickers

to students who raise hands and wait to be called on when I ask for it.

I ask caller outs to put their heads down and hide their eyes if they call out after having been warned or write line (I know this is looked down upon, but it works!) "I will remember to raise my hand and wait to be called on".
