field trips
By mlg

Clip to ScrapBook
Funding for buses is absolutely a factor for our school in planning field trips. We are also in a lower socio-economic community and many of our students' families simply do not have the excess money available to pay for
class trips. With the current high price of gas affecting the cost of bus rental, we are very limited in the distance we can cover to go on field trips. This is especially unfortunate because, although we have a large number of highly worthwhile possibilities within a 30-mile radius of our district, the cost of the buses is fairly prohibitive for more than one trip per grade level per
year. Our Parents' Association does try to help out, but has never been able to give us more than $200-$250 per year for each grade level (not each class). The year before last, I even had to cancel one scheduled trip because the parents were just not able to cover all of costs and I was not in a position to be able to pay for it myself.

This kind of situation really puts our student population at a disadvantage because they seldom have the same kinds of opportunity to experience the many cultural and historical sites in our area that kids in wealthier communities have available to them.
