I personally don't think you should accept it. You walked up and down the aisles collecting homework and then gave them one more reminder. The student still didn't turn it until after that I chance and I think that because| of that you should uphold your policies. I'm guessing that the student maybe had a few questions to finish and he was finishing it while you were collecting it. He brought it up after he finished it. I would have considered it late and gave him a 0 if he was in my class. He didn't finish it as homework; he waited until school to do it. Even if he couldn't find it, part of being responsible |
| means that you turn your work in on time and know where it is. If you are really bothered by giving him a 0, maybe at the end of the grading period or for next year you can change your policy. Maybe it's 50% off if they turn it in that day, but later than when you ask. Then a 0 if it is turned the next day or later. I don't think you did anything wrong by giving him a 0. If he bothered to argue with you, then hopefully that shows that he cares and that he will remember this for next time and remember to turn his work in on time when he asks. If you accepted it, not only would he probably keep doing it, other students may turn to his habbit of turning in work after you've asked for it.
