Specials---Yes!

I support the idea of specials the first day for many of the reasons stated above -- consistency, break for teacher, exciting for kids. The schools where the specialists are assigned a duty to help new teachers etc. sounds nice. In my experience, the specialists were given no specific directions and simply had extra days to plan for their eventual classes. I would even support a (slightly) modified special schedule---for instance having them come to the classroom the first day or two to be introduce themselves and do a short introductory activity in the classroom.
