During school hours, I dress comfortably, yet professionally. Mostly I wear khakis and button-down shirts. I also conduct myself in a professional manner when it comes to hot-button issues such as religion and war. I have had many parents compliment me on the way I teach their children without taking sides. However, I am fairly young and live in a liberal college town. In my free time, I like to go see punk rock shows, hang out with friends who share the same liberal values, and occasionally work with activist causes. This is who I really am. It is done on my time without the label of "teacher" on my | | back. Therefore, when I wear my "f-me I'm twee" shirt around town, I feel no guilt. I am a person first, teaching is just my career. If a parent has a problem with it, that's just too bad. I'd rather find another career than bend to the whims of society's crazy notion that I need to conform socially just to teach.
