teaching the rules of phonics will not confuse them....come on think about it...if you don't teach them phonics then what???? Some kids do just absorb the language some how and do not need direct phonics insturction but then there are the kids who do need the direct instruction...and unfortunately you can't tell just by looking...so I vote for yes teach phonics...It really sounds like you have a pretty normal 1st grade class with a lot of different skills. I'd really focus on those students who are writing strings of letters and calling them words...they are the phonics kids...your kids who are writing the 3 or 4 sentences are doing fine...
