I guess if you did NOT feel lost I would be worried that you did not understand how much First grade teachers are responsible for. I teach second and everytime I am offered the chance to do First I run away in fear. You really do have a very tough curriculum to cover. You are lucky to have a helpful colleague. Its also good to hook up with other First grade teachers in your district and compare notes. I feel it takes at least 3 years to get a handle on curriculum and to get a feel for what your first graders should be doing. You sound like a very caring and thoughtful teacher and I bet you are already doing just fine!
