Fear
By JA

Clip to ScrapBook
Even if you are terrified do not let them know it! If they read your fear of them they will run with it. Don't expect to get punched in the face and you won't. Allow cool down times for the kids when they get upset. If
you can get them to understand it's okay to go hide behind the shelf for a cool down then let them. Provide them with the knowledge to handle their anger by teaching life skills! Life skills at this point may be the most important thing they learn. The thing that will keep them working some where and not living in a jail cell or worse. Read to them! I have found that most students
love a good story and will calm down to listen. Most important - let them know you care and really do care! They know when your faking it! One of my students got caught cheating. We called mom, etc. It was the first full week of school. This week (the second full week) another teacher came questioning about this student writing on something. I was ready to cry. In the end it turned out not to be this student. I prayed for it not to be. I wanted to cry like this student was my own child. I always look for some reason to care and I stick with it even in times of trouble for the student! So spend some time getting to know your students and find a reason to care! They will know it and will be less likely to punch you in the face.
