Have them read silently for 15 minutes and then have them share with a partner what they've been reading. Or have them illustrate what they just read. Or have them illustrate to your read-aloud, then tape up the pictures in your room.BTW, both adults and grade-level sixth graders are perfectly capable of 45 minutes of silent reading. Set the expectation and take no prisoners when someone messes up. They'll do fine.
