I have 3rd graders and similar desks. They keep just the books, notebooks and things they use on a daily basis in the desk. Other books are passed as needed and dictionaries are in a central area. I did buy plastic baskets (about 6x8") for them to keep pencils, erasers,crayons, scissors, bookmarks, etc. so they can find them easily in the desk. I discourage any other personal items because I have divided supply buckets on another shelf with markers, glue sticks, glue, etc. which we pass when needed. This system works well for us.
