Lining Up -- Students always line up in the same order. For the first part of the year it is by the number they are given for the class (#s = alphabetical by last name). Later I may change the order so that others can be closer to the front or if I need to separate a few. Lining up in order fixes any disputes about cutting in line or pushing and shoving. I usually call kids to line up by the group/row they're in and they just fall into position in line. We always spend time in the early part of the year practicing but they pick it up quickly! Oh, I also have a routine so that they know the minute they step into line their mouthes are closed.

Cleaning up -- 15 minutes before dismissal I turn on the "clean up song". This is the signal to clean up their area, get homework folder, pack backpacks and meet me on the carpet for a read aloud. They need to do it before the song is over (which is only 1 1/2 min!) but they catch on so fast! Very effective, little headaches or reminders!
