Common in my area
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
We have quite a few doctors and other professionals in our area who cannot take holidays during the summer months so they take their holidays often around January-Febuary. Many are from South-Africa and this trip is the
only time the children see their grandparents and other relatives and it is important to them.

I have learned over the years to not send tons of homework as it won't get done. Instead I concentrate on math, reading and writing. For reading I will send a reader or two and for writing I ask them to keep a journal. So the only worksheets would be for math.

For shorter holidays I usually

just encourage a lot of reading and the writing in a journal.

At some point it may become too difficult for their children to miss school but it is up to the parents to determine that.

In our school there really is no big difference between excused or non-excused absences - they are still recorded as being absent from school.
