spelling 2/3

You could introduce the "Try Card". These are scraps of paper about recipe card size (make them from recycled paper you get from beside the photocopier). Each child gets one every time they write. They use this paper to
"try" the spelling first, then I'll help with the correct spelling. I'll mark with a check each letter or sound they got right, and then give them the word they need. I keep the trycards when I'm marking, because they tell me a lot about the child's phonic awareness. I try to limit each try card to 4 words.

Another teacher in our building who uses try cards has the child open their

dictionary to the correct page (by initial consonant), and she often will print the word in there for them, so its there next time they need it.

I use a word wall in the room, and I require them to check the word wall first before they approach me. If the word is up there, I will not help them. (All word wall words are also pre printed in their dictionaries) By Gr 2/3 they could also use classroom posters of word families to help them with spelling too.
