I just moved back up to 5th from 1st, so I know how you feel!! I don't plan on getting into major acedemics the first few days obviously. We will write our goals for 5th grade. The students will think of 5 goals (academic or behavioral) they want to accomplish this year. The second week, I will send the sheet home for the parents to read and they will also come up with 5 goals they want their child to accomplish this year. I will make goals for each child after the first quarter.
I also plan on teaching and practicing all our classroom procedures (jobs, getting attention, morning routine, etc.)

activities for my first few days include team building and "getting to know you" activities. I want to do the human knot, bucket and dipper and several others. The kids will mostly know each other, but they won't know me and I won't know them so we will do several activities to break the ice.
