Centers

I was hired as a first year, first grade teacher a day and a half before school started and my classroom beforehand was a science/storage room. I have had to start from scratch. I don't have many resources to work from. What ways can I used centers with limited resources? I hate worksheets and don't have many but have been giving an easy page in the morning while I take count. I would like to move towards having students go to quiet centers when they come in.
Also, do parents have a hard time if a lot of work is not coming home? If I am limiting my worksheets they will not see as much work coming home. How do I deal with that?
