Do not worry. This is my third year and I'm still learning. I think that my first year I was too ignorant to get scared but you are not alone. I start next week and have started freaking out over everything that I have to do before then. For the first week, definitely focus on rules and procedures. You will want to continue to reinforce this for the first 6 weeks so that the kids know exactly what to do. Also, find out if your district does any assessments in reading and writing. If not, I would make a list of letters in the alphabet, or try to find one on-line, and see if kids know their letters. Give them a prompt and have them write to it. Do not expect a lot because it is still new to them. This is very preliminary. Also, give them a blank 100's chart and see how high they can write their numbers. You may also want to take a dolch list (preprimer)and see how many words, if any, that they can read. This is all going to help you to decide how to run your instruction for the rest of the year. If you need any other tips do not hesitate to e-mail. Good luck and remember to breathe.
