Go back to your University training - The teachers guides from your reading and math series have lesson suggestions for first days of reading, writing and math. Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Use these, and talk to the other First Grade teachers in your school and district for information and support . Look in the archives for "The Kissing Hand" and "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" - both of them are excellent stoies/themes for the beginning of Grade One.
