This summer I taught summer school I had three students who had behavioral IEP's, 2 of which were suppose to be taking medication. One student had to be removed(picked up and removed because she refused to walk) from| my classroom at least twice a week and this was in summer school! I was told by the assistant principal that when I see this student start to "tick" it means she is about to shut down. I couldn't believe that I was expected to constantly tip toe around this student and give her all of my attention while the other students had to put up with her outbursts and disruption. One day she was | | angry with me when I asked her to put her purse away and just began removing all of the books and things from her desk and throwing them on the floor. The other kids just watched in amazement. Eventually they became immune to her outburst and ignored them, thank God. I understand that this is not her fault and she is unable to control herself but neither is it the fault of the other children in the class or my own. I have a masters degree in teaching but I am not certified to teach Exceptional Ed, that is why they have Exceptional Ed teachers. It seems sometimes like these students have more rights than everyone else around them including the other students in the class. She will be back in a regular ed class this school year, with promises from the principal that she(the student) will be helped. i hope that she will be.
