leveling books
By Katy

Clip to ScrapBook
There is a book called "Matching Books to Readers" and the upper grade level Guided Reading book by Fountas and Pinnell that has a reference for leveling some texts in the back of the book. You can also use Fry's readability
graph. (I did a search and found it under Kathy Schrock's web page, which also has a TON of other great resources)If you follow the instructions for the Fry graph, you can find out the reading level for any book. Once you have done some, you'll start to feel comfortable at just looking through a book and guessing yourself. I use bookpots in second grade, where students have books that
are about their reading level to choose from but they also know that if they find a book that is too easy or too hard they can abandon it and let me know. I like having them have some control of good book choices as well. Good luck!
