crying and runners! watch out! By Jenna

I teach K, and it wasn’t until my 3rd year with this age group that I got a crier. In fact, I had 4 screamers. While I understand it is hard for mom or dad to leave their child in hysterics, I assure the parents that I| will call them at such and such a time if it continues. I will usually call anyway, just to put their minds at ease. Last year, I had a struggler/runner. She ran all the way to the front of the building before my aide caught her! She fought and fought physically with her mother in the mornings– she didn’t like change at all. Very strong willed child, with a no boundaries parent makes | | a difficult combo. I suggested putting her on the school bus to avoid the morning drama, but that was considered to be “punishing” her for her separation anxiety. Once mom left and this child realized I would not force her to do anything (play for the first few days), she would be absolutely fine. Turned out to be one of the most self-confident kids I have ever met, except for the whole morning issue…I generally give the child a stuffed animal to sit with him or her until the child feels better. I have found that it is best not to play into and give too much attention to this type of behavior. I try to ignore it as best I can (it is hard if they are loud!), and I start the class with something really cool, fun, and interesting. In most cases, the child will get bored with being upset and come join the group. Just keep an eye out for the runners!
