Although I teach students who are a bit younger (4th grade)I have had this same conversation with a few worldly students. While these conversations don't always have the desired result, it is important to have them, and
to let them know that we care and that their success is important to us.
Could you make the case that although he may not see grades as important, they WILL be important in deciding which future classes he is able to take in high school. He will probably be bored in the classes that his grades qualify him to take. Grades are also looked at by employers. Suppose there is a job he is
really interested in getting. The employer considers your student's record versus another candidate's record. The low grades that he thought were fine could cost him such opportunities.
Good luck motivating him!
