Asperger's in classroom By Kim

I am the parent of a sixth grader with AS and have had to deal with almost all the things your message describes. We have had really great teacher experiences and, unfortunately, some very poor ones. I have found that the| best years were those in which the teacher was willing to get educated about Asperger's and other Pervasive Development Dissorders. I recommend reading everything by Tony Atwood that you can get your hands on. He is a psychologist who has published a number of great books and many articles on the Asperger's child. His books give a great view of the reasons why these kids exhibit the | | behaviors that they do and gives strategies to prevent and deal with them in the classroom. I've found this book to be a great asset. I've recommended it to each of my son's teachers and I can immediately tell which ones have taken the time to read it because we have far less behavioral issues in the classroom. The techniques offered are easy to implement and will result in a better classroom experience for the Asperger's child. You are absolutely right in worrying that your classroom could be disrupted. But the key to success is adopting a premptive plan. If you understand what will set off a child with AS, you will better be able to prevent it and focus on teaching the AS child the skills they will need to cope with their disorder. Good luck.
