Perhaps you could have all of the words you're going to sort written on index cards, with the first letter all one color, the second letter another, and the rest of the letters a third color. That way, say, if the first letter is green, the second letter is red, and the rest of the letters are black, you can start by actually moving the words around (in a pocket chart, or on the board with magnets) so the green letters are in order, then within any duplicate green letters, sort the red letters.

I don't know, I haven't tried it, but it's an idea. Good luck!
