Clip to ScrapBook
For August/September
1. Concepts of print checklist, phonemic awareness, letter names and sounds
2. Name cheers-have names on the word wall, the child comes up and points to each letter in his/her name while saying
"give me an s, give me an h, give me an a", etc.
3. Letter sorts-have index cards with students' names on them, point to a letter, and all students with that letter in their name come up, then they sort between beginning, middle, and end; decide if it has its "usual sound" (ex. Sharon has s with an unusual sound)
4. Review beginning sounds-sort names by beginning letter, then sort
by beginning sounds within each letter (ex. C would be sorted between a hard c, a soft c, ch, cr, and cl
5. Clap syllables-clap beats to each person's name to show the syllables
6. Match beginning sounds-say a sound name, and all students with that beginning sound starting their name should stand; an s sound would include students with a soft c name such as Cindy
7. Hearing rhyming words-use names of students that will have several rhyming words and make a list of the rhyming words; possible names are Bill, Pat, Mike
8. Segmenting words into sounds-have students line up by stretching out their names, see if they can hear and write the letters they hear at the beginning, middle, and end
9. Key names for consonants-write all the consonents, including common blends, digraphs, and c's the sound like an s and g's that sound like a j. List the names of your students under the appropriate letter/blend
10. Vowel Posters-(6 sessions) Each session covers a new vowel; list under that vowel all of the students who have that vowel in their name, highlight/underline the vowel. You may also strike through a silent e. The sixth day is y when it acts like a vowel.
11. Making a picture dictionary (include blends)
12. Word Wall
13. Rounding up the Rhymes-use a book with a lot of rhyming words and make a list of rhyming words that have the same spelling pattern (different patterns may be crossed out after they've been discovered) and practice using these words to help you read a new word they may encounter with the same spelling.
14. Guess the covered word

I hope this helps you in your planning!
