Attention Signal
By Jan

Clip to ScrapBook
I have used the following quiet signals with great success:

1. 3,2,1 Close
3= Mouths closed
2= eyes on me
1= hands free
Closed= we're ready to go
After practicing this for a while the students are compliant
after hearing 3. Don't move to the next number until ALL students are demonstrating the behavior you want.Peers will remind their friends that aren't following directions most of the time so you won't have to say anything (I usually don't). I learned this strategy during student teaching and once I got a job I had all my colleagues using it because it worked so well.

2. D.E.A.L

Drop

Everything And Listen

This is what I use now just because it involves less speaking on my part, but I expect the same behavior as the preceding strategy.

The key to getting students' attention is to practice, practice, practice and most importantly don't lower your expectations. Refuse to move on!
