Reading First grant
By LynnK 3rd Idaho

Clip to ScrapBook
My school also received a Reading First grant. We are finishing our week of training tomorrow.I am very excited about it. A lot depends on how your grant was written. My school (3 sections of each grade k-3) has each grade
with a 90 min Reading block, 30 min Language arts block, 60 minutes Workshop/Intervention, and 60 minutes of collaboration time for each grade level k-3 one day a week. The 90 minutes of Reading includes the preparing to read which focuses on phonemic awareness, sounds and letters, phonics, fluency, and word knowledge for about 30 minutes. Then there is the reading and responding which
includes background, comprehension, etc. That lasts about 60 minutes. Our grant was written so this would be an uninterrupted block of time. The Language Arts block includes spelling, vocabulary, writing process, and grammmar skills/penmanship. Hope this helps. Email me if you need more answers.
