Back-to-School Night
By Robin

Clip to ScrapBook
We don't have an Open House in my district, just Back-to-School Night.I open with a children's book or poem reflecting the importance of community or some other important aspect of my teaching. Then, I introduce myself by
telling the parents a little of my background and qualifications, and I try to convey my enthusiasm for working with their children this year. For my Back-to-School Night, I give the parents a handout with the basic info so they can refer to it throughout the year. It has such things as class schedule, homework policy, parties and birthday celebrations, and some curriculum highlights. I
have an overhead with the main headings I want to touch on throughout the night.I would have the children write a note to their parents. My kids usually ask the parents to notice certain things in the room, or in their desks. I would also have the parents write a note to their child. You could have them write a memory of their time in your grade, or just a simple "good luck, I love you" message. If you have a digital camera and access to a projector or monitor, you can do a PowerPoint showing the parents around the room. Two hours is a long time! Good luck!
