Specific Subject Certification in Elementary By Sharon

Have they told you why an elementary teacher needs to be certified in a specific subject?
I can understand it for middle/junior high and high school.
What subjects are they recommending? I thought elementary teachers taught all subjects, not just specific ones! Older students (i.e. 6-12 grade)begin changing classes and that is understandable to teach one subject, but that is not elementary.
