Have fun with your read aloud choices. Someone already mentioned Maniac McGee. I love Indian in the Cupboard so much I read it every year. The kids loved Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and the sequel to that too. All of these are leveled higher than 4.0 so that's a plus because they'd have difficulty reading them independently. This year I'll introduce a few that are in a series hoping that if the students like the one I've read, they'll read others. Last year's group of boys simply loved the books from Deltora Quest. I'll start with this because it's a series, interesting and a genere I don't usually lead with (fantasy.) And speaking of fanstasy Harry Potter usually gets thrown into the mix.
Other favorites, some already mentioned--Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Becaue of Winn Dixie, Judy Moody, Roal Dahl books including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach. Also check the Proteacher archives because this subject comes up frequently. Enjoy your reading and fourth graders.
