This is a reply as well as a vent. I teach 1st and at the beginning you absolutely have to teach them to do EVERYTHING! I use a clapping pattern when I want to get the kids attention. They clap back at me and know once they clap they have to stop talking. Besides that, we have procedures for passing/picking up papers, lining up, getting pencils, unpacking, etc. The list goes on and on. It does seem like all day long you are just teaching them how to do all these things. I have a particularly challenging class this year. I just keep telling myself that it will all click with them soon....hopefully! Of course, after seeing what a young class I have (many are still 5 and just turning six) and talking to their teachers last year and hearing they weren't sure if somey were ready for first grade isn't really making it any easier. However, you just can't give up and you have to be consistent.
