What about having a topic on the board right when they come in? Then they would right about it in a reading response journal. Give them topics about a story or book they are currently reading and have them write a reflection on the topic consisting of 5 or more sentences. I really think this is a wonderful way to start a class. Here's why:

    1. You can get the kids settled down as soon as they enter the room.

    2. With the students going right to their seats, you can take attendance much easier.

    3. Reflecting on something that happened in the book or story they are reading will help refresh their memory of homework and/or the day before in class.

    4. Daily writing will boost writing skills for students.
