There is a Way
By Victoria

Clip to ScrapBook
I start this once I have got the Readers' Workshop solidly underway. It is indeed something I learned from On Solid Ground.

As soon as the kids come in and get settled, they swing right into a Reading Warmup. This is
a time when they can choose many different things from the library instead of their independent reading book baggies, so they may choose to read something much easier than their actual levels.

I leave clerical tasks until later in the day (lunch, prep, after school) and just finish what I absolutely need to finish (attendance)immediately. Then as the other children are doing their warmup

reading (about 15 minutes), I take my struggling readers (aka lowest) in a small group for word work or whatever they need.

Before I can do ANY of that, though, I get the routine established so I don't have 15 children running around and screaming while I'm trying to teach 5 or 6! :o)
