Writing
By Lori

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Jen,

Yes, I take some kind of sample writing -- journal entry, letter to their last year's teacher about what they did over the summer, what they expect to do and learn over this year, etc. I make copies of their writing
and use the copies to mark up. I have a table of grammar skills, etc. for each student and I mark them with codes depending on the student's grasp of the concept -- NU - not used, NI - Needs improvement, A - accomplished. I teach mini lessons on concepts to the whole class where the majority of the class does not use the concept or needs improvement. For other skills I take the
students in groups depending on the skill. I also use a daily oral lesson from the student's own writing. I may take a sentence and not capitalize or punctuate it. Students must make the correction on their homework sheets. We go over that the next day. Just a short something to enforce particular concepts.

I think it would work fine with fourth grade.

I re-evaluate skills to concentrate on twice a grading period.

Hope that helps.
Lori
