firedrill fiasco
By funny story...now

Clip to ScrapBook
My first year at this school (fourth grade) there was an unannounced firedrill the first week of school. I hadn't gone through the procedure yet so it was a mess. My ADHD kid was the first to jump up and just start running...in
the wrong direction. Now, the nearest stairs to an exit are literally right in front of my classroom but he decides to hang a right and just run down the hall. Why does about 20 of the other children decide to follow him (running and knocking other kids) to the farthest exit to safety I'll never know. Well, the other 14 children and I go down the correct stairwell. When we got
outside I didn't know what to do. This is a huge school of 1400 students...and I had no idea where more than 1/2 my students were. My team teacher said he'd watch my remaining students while I snuck around the huge school looking for my "lost" ones. I was just walking around whispering, "Room XXX, anyone from room XXX?" Finally, I found them. Then we get upstairs and I'm about to give them a lecture when I realized I left my keys in the locked classroom!!! So, both the students and the teacher learned a lesson that day. I will always teach fire drill procedure on the first day AND remember my keys! LOL
