Your post sounds like something I would have posted many many years ago. I student taught third grade too and then taught that grade for several years before switiching to Kindergarten fourteen years ago. Being with this age has its ups and downs but it is all worth it in the end. Be prepared to be in hot demand 100% of the time. Your planning time will be precious because it will be the only time you will be to get extra things done. As far as rules-hit them the first day. My kids are usually coming from a pre-school which is social oriented and we have to set the rules straight right away.
Remember to be flexible and patient-they are first year students just like you are a first year teacher!!
