Clip to ScrapBook
I start the year by doing a running record on each child to see where they should be book wise.I focus a lot of the beginning of the year on basic reading strategies like skip the word and read the rest, does it sound right,
does it make sense, etc. My typical lesson is as follows...
1. Intro new vocab. I tend to focus on useful words they still might not know, sight words.
2. We use the words before we read. We might write them on white boards, or make and break them with magnetic letters.
3. I do a picture walk through, espcially for the emergent readers I think this is important.
4. Then
we do actual guided reading of the book. I think one of the hardest things for some people is remembering guided reading is not round robin reading.
5. We do some activity with the book, might be a picture, etc. At this time I ask some questions to test comprehension and inference. In the beginning of the year as you know the books are pretty simple so it might be a fill in the blank type thing.

*I usually send home books to practice with that we read in group.

A former and wiser teacher I worked with once taught me to think of reading like flying a plane. At first the teacher is the pilot, then the teacher helps the student fly the plane, and then the student flies alone.

I hope this helped. Lori
