evaluation
By emme

Clip to ScrapBook
At the beginng of the year I rarely have students who can read. My most important evaluation measures recognition of capital and lower case alphabet, and recogniton and printing of numerals 0 to 9. So that's what I test;
abc's out of order, numerals, and I have them print their name and tell me their birthday. Our first interviews are 3rd week Sept, so I make a point of having this info by then, (as well as work samples) and explaining to parents that a low score in this area suggests they might not be ready to learn to read. I also ask directly if the child gets a bedtime story evey night. If the
answer is "no" I have a speech, but it really is too late - it's the PREVIOUS 5 years that predict success in Grade One, and the parents need to know its time to get down to business NOW. WE have the parents sign a "bedtime story" contract and begin the Home Reading program.
