There are many things you can do without textbooks (I don't use my books all the time anyway!):
1. Newspapers - read current events, write summaries, do scavenger hunts with them (give them several things to find in the
paper), etc...
2. Novels - read a good novel with them and let them do a reading response journal. If you can get your hands on a class set of novels, or just several copies (do groups), you can let them read along with you. If you have several copies of different novels, you can do literature circles with them. Take them outside, weather permitting (and assuming it's a decent neighborhood),
to spread them out some.
3. If you have access to small white boards, you can do a lot. I especially love them for math. Go to Home Depot and buy a shower board for $8. and ask them to cut it into small squares for you - they usually do it for free. Buy a small dry erase marker for each child (or let them bring them).

That's a few ideas to maybe trigger a few more anyway!
