One of the teachers at our school used file folders that just opened at the top. (She might have just used regular file folders and then had them laminated.) This hung off of the front of the desk or on the side...if they were working in groups. I think the just taped them to the desk or maybe used magnetic strips on the back of them. She had a cute fish cut-out that had the kids' names on them that were underneath the lamination...so they knew where they sat and didn't mix up folders if they happened to come off. Then, when kids had work left to do, they put it into the folder...which would stick out of the top so it was very easy to see who still had work to be done.
