CPS
By Heather

Where do I begin????

I just graduated in May, and was agressively seeking a job in Chicago. CPS was the most promising, so I sent my resume to every school with an open position, went on interviews, went to the job fair,
etc... I was offered a position by one principal, and after accepting, all I heard was "See you September 2nd." I fully expected an orientation, a tour of the school, something to prepare me for the fall. I went back to the school after accepting the position with a list of questions for the principal. Despite our arranged appointment, she wasn't there, and the assistant couldn't tell
me anything. I was told the principal would call me to discuss things, but never did. Every time I call, she's not there.

The new-hire center is ridiculously unorganized, and had me convinced I wasn't going to have a job, as they continually delayed my staffing. I am now staffed (or so I'm told), but never signed an actual contract. Is there one I'm supposed to sign??

I guess my biggest issue right now is that school starts the 7th, and I only get 2 days to prep for it. I've asked the school if I can come in, just to SEE my room to get an idea of what I'll need. Not possible. I asked for teacher editions to view over the summer. Not possible. I have no clue as to what I'll need for my room. Will I have a classroom budget? Can I order supplies through the school (construction paper, writing paper, etc...)? I don't know if I'll have a calendar set or a flag, or even a clock, which are all important to the first grade. I don't know how they do lunch count, attendance, recess, or dismissal. Will someone show me, or are these kids at my mercy as I try to figure it out?

What level should I expect the students to be on academically? Will they know how to write their names? Where should I start with them? It's just so frustrating that I have all these questions, and no one else is concerned about them. I feel like I'm pracitically begging them to let me be prepared. Is this normal for city schools?

I know you might not be able to answer all of this, but even just knowing someone else went through it and survived helps me a lot!
