I agree with maryellen. Family first! Unless it's in your contract, which it sounds like it isn't, it's not your responsibility. Will your principal give in to petty competitiveness and think poorly of you because of what this teacher thinks? Personally I admire people who know their priorities and don't over-extend themselves.

Or, could this teacher be looking for ways to socialize and feels bad on a personal level? Just be yourself, be polite about it, and don't worry.
