One thing my principal always looked for was 'student work' well displayed. My room is challenging because I do not have lots of wall space. I stretched wire over the window area and used little clothespins to hang stuff.An easy way to use up a big bare spot is to mount one bright sheet of paper for each kid and just put the kids papers up on each 'frame'. Display spelling tests,other work,etc.
